Has my chrysalis died?Updated 5 months ago
They’ve been in chrysalis for a long time - The butterflies normally emerge within 7 and 14 days, this can be extended in cooler months or if the habitat is placed in a cool area. Please allow your last chrysalis at least one week more from the first butterfly hatching.
They have gone black - Before emergence, the chrysalides will darken in colour and can become almost black. You should also start to see the outlines of the butterflies’ wings showing through.
Stopped moving - The chrysalides should not move while in the habitat, so this is normal. They will only wriggle if they feel threatened; this however uses up valuable energy so we do not advise encouraging this.
If you have any concerns, please contact us with a clear photo of the chrysalides showing their shape and colouring so we can advise further.
