My stick insects are laying eggs, what do I do?Updated 9 months ago

Indian stick insects are "parthenogenetic" meaning that females lay unfertilised eggs which will hatch into more females.  These in turn will lay eggs which will hatch again into females, and so on.

You can hatch another generation if you wish, but be aware a stick insect can lay several hundred eggs in a lifetime. You will need to separate the eggs from the waste at the bottom of the habitat.  The eggs are 2mm in size, brown, smooth and look like a seed, they also have a small protruding plug on one side.

If you do not want all/any of the eggs to hatch, we recommend putting the eggs in the freezer for a week to prevent them from hatching, this is easiest done while cleaning out the habitat as you can empty the entire contents of the bottom of the habitat into a small plastic container, freeze, then dispose the following week and start again. You can then dispose of them in the normal household waste.
