Your caterpillars have arrived and you're ready to start your butterfly raising project!

Here are some important things to keep in mind as you are observing your caterpillars:

  • Your caterpillars may be inactive for the first 24-48 hours after they arrive. This is normal behaviour, they have to adjust after their journey to you!  Please give them time to acclimate.
  • Webbing is normal and is a sign your caterpillars are happy and healthy!  It is spun by the caterpillars to help them hang onto their surroundings.
  • Do not open the Cup of Caterpillars.  Opening the cup can introduce bacteria to your caterpillar friends and harm their metamorphosis process.
  • The caterpillars come with all the food they need at the bottom of the cup.
  • There are multiple air holes punched in the lid of the cup, so your caterpillars can breathe easily.  The holes are covered with a thin paper disc to stop the caterpillars from escaping and foreign objects entering!
  • This is an observational project, do not shake the cup.
  • Do not place your caterpillars in direct sunlight, or anywhere they can be exposed to heat or drafts.
