Why does my butterfly have deformed wings?Updated 5 months ago

When you transfer your chrysalides from the cup to the habitat, it is of upmost importance that you gently remove any silk or frass that may surround the chrysalides. If the silk and frass are not removed at this time, your butterfly may actually become entangled in the silk when it emerges from the chrysalis. This entanglement may result in deformed wings which unfortunately cannot be fixed.

There are two options in this case, you can feed it some nectar or fruit in the habitat for the duration of its lifetime. Place long twigs and/or flowers inside to make some nice hiding places.

Alternatively, you can feed it for a couple of days and release it gently into a protected area - such as a flower patch that isn't too open for birds, or under a shrub. This way, it can still feed, crawl around and mate.
